With Helms as the driving force, the Goodwill concept spread across the United States. He conceived the idea of collecting unwanted household goods and employing men who were impoverished to repair and refurbish them. Income from the resold goods paid the workers' wages. The system worked and the Goodwill method of self-help was born. Goodwill's client population includes people with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities, or dependence on public support. Revenue for Goodwill comes from a variety of sources. The sale of donated goods remains the greatest source of funding for programs Goodwill provides. Other major sources for funding are service contracts, rehabilitation fees, government grants, public support, and salvage sales. Cash gifts and bequests are also accepted. Goodwill Industries in Lincoln is accredited through CARF (Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities) and maintains an effective Employment Services Program that offers job training and employment programs to people who face barriers to employment. Some of the employment services we provide include Situational Assessment, Work Adjustment, Work Services, Community Employment Services, and Job Connection. Today Goodwill Industries is unique; of all the agencies in Lincoln, it is the only one that serves the broad spectrum of persons with barriers to employment. Our business works, so people can! |
